I recently bought a "sealed" penny roll for $14. Usually they're filled with 1 Indian head or 1 merc, but this one had 4 I Indians, one being a Slicker 1872 Indian!

Maybe not such a scam after all?

If you are happy, that's all that matters. But with common wheaties only worth Three Cents, those Indians have to have a resale value over $12 without fees to break even.

The problem with all these "sealed" or "unsearched" lots is, you cannot know the past history of them. If the dealer is honest, you can know that they were unsearched by him or her, or sealed by someone other than the dealer, but that would be it.

That sure goes for bulk buys as well. Where'd they come from. Once bought 1000 wheats from a fellow who said he gathered (bought) from his customers at a craft show type venues, their jars etc. First batch was 53% pre 1940 w/ 5-1909vdb's, a 22d, and many 20's 30's S mints, best I'd ever done.

Soooo...bought two more...94% were common 40's & 50's, looked like a dealer's junk bin. Funny he never replied to my email of complaint, even sent back check for one of his craft items I was buying!

Hey, if your happy with your pickup, find, or purchase than that's all that matters. My limited experience with the unsearched rolls is mixed. Have gotten some nice mercs & Indian heads. But it tends to be more towards the not so great side. My wife got a kick out of the searching part so the $14 spent was worth it. They were a great stocking stuffer for her. I just have a hard time believing that the seller wouldn't 1st search the roll for that homerun before selling it, but there are some I'm sure.

I too have had mixed results with those"unsearched" rolls. It depends on the seller. If you notice, some rolls go for $15 or more. I've had decent luck with some of those. Got some key dates, like 1910 and 1914s.
Plenty of Indian Heads, usually common dates. Some Mercury dimes, and a 1858 flying eagle. Also some bright shiny BU's, common dates.
The cheaper rolls are usually mostly 40's and 50's. Maybe a steel penny or two.

I search IHC's every day, and I come across them all the time. I can't believe folks fall for this over and over again? A shotgun roll of wheats, that just happens to have a IHC or a Mercury dime on the end, really? If you ever take time to read feedback, you'll discover the truth when someone is not too ashamed too to leave negative or neutral feedback.

" I can't believe folks fall for this over and over again? "

Very true, It's sort of a naive optimism that just maybe, a key date will be in there.

Unless of course you actually need common date wheats to fill up your folders. The IHC and dimes are just a bonus at that point . .

When I looked at the link on ebay, this other one was suggested:

1 SHOTGUN ROLL OF WHEAT PENNIES WITH Indian Head cent ON END 1909-1958 for $10.00

He's even more prolific. 3,583 sold WoW!

Hey, I resemble that remark!

I bought a few of his rolls, nothing special, just curious.
One roll was short six pennies. He did make good and sent me an additional roll, gratis.

All 40's and 50's common dates!
