Hi all, Just browsing the upcoming Torex auction and fell upon this: it's item #1023. Do you guys think it is a high 9? I know there's a lot of discussion and arguments on this coin because there seems to be more "levels" than just a low and high 9 (some look like a mid-level 9). Just looking for opinions. I'm not interested in the coin itself, but it'd be nice to see what people think since I haven't seen a discussion on the 1929 varieties in about a year Edited by Paulsz 01/27/2017 12:23 pm

That one doesn't look like a high 9 to me. I think the highest 9 has a more rounded point on the tip of the 9, like the photo below. This one I would call a medium high 9 and has a more chisel shaped end to the 9.

The auction coin is not a 'High 9'...

Is it even a medium 9? I'm having a hard time telling from the photo.

I don't think the one in the auction is even a medium 9 CV. It looks low to me.

I modified the title to this thread, so it would not be so misleading...

SPP...I wonder if it's a 9/9 instead of a High 9.

It is in a PCGS holder, and I would be cautious with the lighting and photography (the same "doubling" appears above the 1 as well)... I would not dare speculate on that, unless I could see it in hand or had the PCGS number to look it up (assuming it was PCGS Shield graded). I normally look at the lower tip of the 9 for the doubling. http://goccf.com/t/92838

It sure doesn't look like a high nine from the picture supplied. Here's a close-up of the date if it helps. Cheers, Bill

Does anyone have ICCS pop report numbers on these?
I have an ms64 red high 9 and think it might be the highest graded.

ICCS does not separate the 9's in their report. They are all grouped under one category. There are 25 at MS65 and 1 at MS66. No way of knowing if any are High 9 or not.

I know of at least four examples of ICCS MS-64 Red High 9's out there....
