Hi everyone,

After a number of years away from coin collecting, I have decided to come back to the hobby.

I found this 1957 penny today and noticed partial penny rim size impressions on the front and back of the coin. I've not come across such impressions on both sides of a coin before.

I was wondering if people think this is a PMD or something else (and whether anyone has come across these double impressions before)?

Thanks.
Melissa

Off-center, poorly struck on both sides? Looks more interesting than PMD but I'm not exactly sure how that would happen during the strike itself. ?

What if the coin was not ejected properly and got a partial double strike? Can that even happen?

@mmj83, first welcome (back). Second, especially if those two impressions roughly line up, then this might have been done by a bored teenager sandwiching this coin between two others in a vice and squeezing.

Thanks for the suggestion @spence. The impressions don't seem to line up. Originally I was thinking of a coin being sandwiched against it in a vice. However, I have never come across an example of both sides showing such impressions. And examples I have seen have tended to show more of the vice markings on the coin, reflective of the amount of pressure being put on the coin.

Your penny is a "Vise Job" PMD.
I made this one by sandwiching a coin between two other coins and gave it a belt with a gimpy hammer.

Thanks for the image @trout1105. Have you been able to make one where only a partial section of the rim is visible (ie. no sign of the Queen being impressed onto the coin)? This is what has me most intrigued.
