Looking at the back,it would seem the press made a mark without the die in place. If you look below her ear on reverse side, you can see the center punch mark. Whats you opinion? Al

Could be, Never seen or thought that? Would they grind the backs off to a smooth surface then make a design? Could it be the impression of the press with out the stamp or die in place?

That coin has been lathed to remove detail and add the concentric circles, possibly the beginnings of a love token. A coin cannot be minted unless two dies are involved as both sides are struck simultaneously.

I'm not certain, but I believe that if the die were not present, the coin would not have been struck at all. There would have been too much of a void due to the absence of the die.

Biokemist and Bobby have this one nailed perfectly. Many older dimes, quarters and even a few halves were made into "love tokens". Actually, when I think about it, most coin types were used. The coin shown in the thread was either changed to look like that as an end result or it was indeed the first part of creating a love token.

It was not struck that way.

Here's a link to pictures of a bunch of them.

Thanks,
Bill

Don't bother, I already found it. Two years ago today as a matter of fact.

I've seen a Cent one time that looked like that and in the back a dime would fit into it. Figured it was a Magicians coin. But with the hollowed out area on the reverse, you could even put a cut out of a picture in side of it and keep it there as well. Looks like if was done intentional and may have been a keepsake for something.
