Doing some research, I ran across this coin. Frankly, I'm baffled the coin was 1. graded "MS68" by NGC and 2. somebody paid $6462 for it! My eyes see a bunch of hits on that "MS68" coin (closeup) I'm pretty sure you could easily get the nice 76-D DDO in a real MS65 for that price. What gives? Edited by Thulium 02/13/2017 5:21 pm

Why someone would pay THAT much money for a relatively common coin is beyond reason.
I like to look at it as "stupid people do stupid things!" Also, the more money they have the more stupider things they seem to be able to accomplish.

Yeah--definitely 'stupid money' thrown at that one. I guess I'm also "old school" with regards to grading, because I think business-strike coins grade MS67--tops. Over that is the sole territory of modern proofs--just to me.

Condition rarity I guess. One sold last month I think from a Heritage auction PCGS MS68 for over 6000$ - pop 6

This may be because of its grade. Since there were so many made back then, it is probably rare to actually find a coin in that condition. The same goes for other "pointless" coins like the 1965 quarter, which sells for good money in high MS like this one.

Misplaced faith in TPGs can be rather costly.

If I had $6,462 to spend on a coin, it wouldn't be some common modern trash coin . I don't care what the grade is .Even MS-69 . I would take that quarter and put it in a kiddie ride for my granddaughter .

Quote: If I had $6,462 to spend on a coin, it wouldn't be some common modern trash coin And this is a one-year issue that was more commonly collected in MS grades--because a lot of different coin sets were issued for the Bicentennial. But if you need to spend $6K on a coin like this--knock yourself out. If I had this $$ to spend on a coin, there's so many others I'd choose first.

There are people that feel there is real value in having a top registry set, so they don't care what the coin inside is. I rather feel that the best piece of crap is just a really nice piece of crap.

Now for the umpteenth time, will somebody please design the most necessary emjoi of them all, for instances just like this...what may you ask, but a dancing lollypop emjoi, of course! Six grand could buy a really nice COMPLETE Morgan set just about, or how about a nice gold type, sheesh!
