I'd say it might be a little sharper than VG, and that a professional restoration might make it look better. Don't let an amateur mess with this.
As for whether or not it's genuine, you really need to have a microscopic photo of it. Better yet, you really need and expert to look at it in person.

Nice save.
Since you title starts off with the melting pot, but you add "My friend said some lady sold these who owned a laundromat", I am baffled. Is your friend an owner of a melting pot? But then you say you found it...

My friend is a owner of a precious metals store, he probably didn't see it....they really don't go through them for key dates....I try to buy their junk silver to resell and on occasion I find some nicer pieces like this. Bill I will try to take a better pic of the mintmark. I am positive it's real. I don't think it's worth restoring cause it has a big scratch on the head and several rim hits,

I think that if you did an acetone soak, some of that black crud will come off revealing bright spots and then that will raise questions. I could be wrong. I haven't done many acetone soaks.

 If you intend to sell it -- then I agree. Let the new owner worry about that. I think that if you did an acetone soak, some of that black crud will come off revealing bright spots and then that will raise questions. I could be wrong. I haven't done many acetone soaks. Interesting. Send it in for a pro restoration or soak it in acetone.
