I'm searching around for one more Seated dollar to finish my 7070, when I came across this one on E-bay (don't plan on buying it). Something about the "smashed" dentles are telling me it could be counterfeit. Your thoughts?

Interestingly enough the stars look right, that's what I look for at first. Second, no die cracks, unless this was EDS, the larger coins seem to have some deformity? Don't know for sure?

Would someone more knowledgeable than I chime in on the apparent wear? Does not look to be on the high points. I dunno though. Wow! Almost complete 7070? You are to be congratulated!

Best advice: Buy a PCGS or NGC certified example when it comes to Seated and Trade dollars as fakes are rampant

Fake. Color is off. Details seem crude. The real Miss Liberty doesn't have a schnozz that big. I'd expect the weight is too low since it doesn't look like silver. As mentioned, certification for Seated and Trade dollars is mandatory unless you know these coins very well.

I agree that the color looks suspect but I would wait for nss-52 to weigh in. He spots out counterfeits with laser-like precision.

I strongly suspect that this is a fake. The color and mushy XF details largely fuel my suspicion. Add to this that the seller, living in the Ukraine, has 0 feedback and no other items listed. With but twenty hours left, the bidding is at a mere $40 .... seemingly, a bargain. Here's the listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1871-Seated...82365668299?Close-up pics:

Thing about Seated dollars is that the rims are fat and consistently the same width for the whole circumference of the coin, front and back. The rims on this coin vary.

Not only does the coin look suspicious the new Seller is from the Ukraine and has zero feedback.
I can guarantee with 99.999% accuracy that the coin is counterfeit.

The clincher for me is the denticles above liberty's head and above the eagle... They kind of spiral(?) in that area, they disappear above 'states' and her head also

C'mon man!

In my defense... 1. I don't know how to post a link. 2. It was just a question.

Quote: I don't know how to post a link. If it is an ebay listing, just copy the listing number and paste it here. If it is a web page, just copy the URL from the address box of that page and post it here (in compliance with board posting rules, of course).
