So thanks to Wildflower I have been highly motivated to pull out all of my 50 cent pieces and go through them.... Planning ahead I was already looking at my '44's to see if I had anything interesting.... The following coin really popped out to me. Can someone help me with this one... is it a specimen, or prooflike or business finish.. the fields are absolute mirror-like.. The reverse has some really nice purple toning but it's really hard to capture I have to improve my lighting for the photography set up.. Anyways I'd love to know what type of finish this coin is and would also love to hear your input as to grade... Love to see other 44's and hopefully post some more if I can find anything interesting... The reverse.... (wish I could the toning) The obverse with absolute mirror fields A comparison to what every other 50 cent coin looks like.. (coin in question is on the right)

Nice looking coin, I can't help with the toning, but I'm sure Paul will drop by. Nice die clash though

I would say Business Strike. There are no PL coins from 1944 and the only Specimen Strikes were with the Narrow 4 variety. I believe that is the low 4 variety.

Here is an example of what an original Choice BU Cameo 1944 should look like . From an amazing original BU hoard of several hundred 1943, 1944, and 1945 fifty cents acquired on the Lower Mainland of BC in 2013. ebay 201600242852.

That one is called a 'wide date' I'm pretty sure.
Looks like some copper showing through.

SHAFTA9a- It's a "narrow date low 4" variety I believe. Also, can't be copper showing through, the coin is 80% silver

No copper.. that's just the toning on this...this coin is closest to a "monster toner" that I own... but just can't capture it... right now my photo set up I have a fluorescent light from above an incandescent light from the left and an LED from the right....
Today I just bought to lamps from IKEA so I can put incandescent lights in the photo area and get rid of the others! Hopefully once the kiddies are asleep I'll have some time to tinker with the lighting and capture this sucker!
So this is just struck with a set of fresh dies... cool good to know.. the difference is outstanding and so appealing! Thanks

Agcoinau' s coin is a low 4s variety.... Zoell J445c. The diagonal of the last 4 is double punched. There is a healthy Rverse Clash Mark which is found on most of this particular variety.

You're very welcome AgCoinAu. What I see to be one of the very best benefits of coin collecting is that a collection can be stashed away somewhere and left for days, months or years without taking much space. I'm comparing that to a hobby that requires larger sized tools, equipment or supplies and take up a lot of space. Just a couple more '44 photos coming up.

Zoell variety FL445kto - die crack on the obverse of the 50c, the last photo on this other thread. Die cracks can be difficult to photograph but watching out for them on both the reverse and obverse of all the King George series is worthwhile. http://goccf.com/t/196829&whichpage=2 This one, well it's one that no one would suggest had ever been cleaned. I've noticed the dark grey dull toning to be quite common and depending on the year, whenever I see one my imagination spots it in the pocket of a dirty, dusty WW2 soldier on the battlefield.
