I am sure we've all been there at one point or another, why can't ebay regulate what some sellers are charging for shipping fees in their automated system according to the weight and size of the package (here are actual costs Via USPS 1ST CLASS Package/thick envelop including del.conf.:1-4oz $2.61 5-8oz $2.77) particularly when it comes to sh&h fees for coins!they are having a field day with raking in that extra $$ Yes to be fair I can see 20-50c over the actual cost to cover envelop. I recently purchased THREE Dimes from this seller and he charged me a whopping $5.50 for the shipping! when I questioned it ironically he admitted he was and lectured me with his reasons ,this was his respond: If you had to pay what I have to pay bonded employees a living wage to HANDLE ( shipping and handling) this property you would understand why our accountant regularly advises us on a yearly basis that we are losing over $20,000 a year on shipping and handling (the difference between what we charge for shipping and HANDLING and what it actually costs us pay for the shipping and handling. Fortunately, we have not raised our rates in 10 years although our hourly pay, expenses, and postal rates have all gone up..........we have continually gotten more efficient. If you doing your own work or this is a hobby then you are used to looking at your cost for postage and supplies as your expense. As a business with 8-10 employees it's all a different consideration' Then you get the "Paul Harvey"............now you know the rest of the story....... When people have the information that we are operating from a secure vault facility in downtown.... with all those employees then they don't feel so bad about the "shipping and handling" because they can envision that it's not some money making scheme that adds to their cost. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Chase007 02/23/2017 10:39 am

I can somewhat relate since I have done quite a number of sales on ebay. $5.50 for 3 dimes seems excessive but I do my best to make people pay exactly what the shipping cost would be (I also figure in what ebay takes out of it, the 10%, any insurance or signature confirmation, and approx. envelope costs). You also have to figure in gas to go to the post office as well. Lots of stuff to consider especially when working with less expensive items. Again, I am not defending THAT much over what the shipping costs but I guess with that seller he tries getting more out of it which is certainly annoying. I would just avoid those with over-the-top shipping.

Yes he has listed $2.95 per coin, with the mention of .75c per additional coin which he did not honor!
But my real concern here is how far some sellers are going with this!
do you not agree there should be a limit?

I for one, do not want ebay telling me what I'm allowed to charge for anything.

Mister Kairu I agree with your points and I do think it is fair for the sellers to recoup some of the mentioned costs.but I also believe there is a difference between a fair businessmanship and greediness!

$2.95 plus $1.50 for two additional coins, comes to $4.45. You have a beef for the $1.05 additional that seller charged you imo. I would have waited for an invoice with the correct shipping before paying.

I agree the market will determine what price people are willing to bear and it should be no more dictated than the actual price of the service.
I know what I will pay for a coin. If what I am willing to pay is $10...
Then I will pay $10 if free shipping I would pay $8 if $2 shipping I would pay $2 if $8 shipping
It is my responsibility to determine what cost I will bear.

There is an auction house I do quite a bit of business with, who has truly outrageous 'Post and packing fees'. I simply deduct that amount from what I am willing to pay. An astute buyer would do the same on ebay. Do also keep in mind the seller is paying final value fees to ebay on the shipping fee, i.e. if their cost to ship a package is $2.61, they are kicking another 26 cents to ebay, plus their percentage to Paypal, plus all of those incidentals which add up: Bubble mailers, paper, 2x2's poly mailers, ink, business cards, ect. ect. ect. While all negligible costs on their own, multiply by 2500 shipments a month, that adds up to a good sum. By the way, contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as 'free shipping'. You are paying for built in to the price you are paying.

A whopping $5.50 for shipping.......now that is way too funny. Two things, one you have never run a business and never had to deal with shipping in another country. Try our Canadian shipping rates! We recently increased our first class USPS shipping rate to 2.99 and believe me we are subsidizing each and every USPS package. There is no such thing as free shipping. Someone pays for it.

Ask for a refund of the difference of what you should have paid vs what you actually paid for S&H. THAT difference is all you are owed. Put yourself in the Seller's shoes for a few months of selling low end items on ebay and let me know how that works out for you. (HINT: Do not give up your daytime job just yet!)

The seller is not making a whopping profit on charging you $5.50 for handling and shipping. The seller is covering his cost: First Class with tracking Envelope Printed label Packing material, Tape, Flips Labor for packing Delivery of package to Post Office
Your going to pay for the shipping cost in the price of the coin or known shipping cost.

The buyer is not owed anything if the seller the listed their shipping charges in the listing, which I am assuming they did. I also think it is more than a bit of exaggeration to have labeled this thread as 'Sellers scam for making ridiculous money on sh&h fee charges on the bay!', It certainly is hyperbolic to call this a scam, and I certainly do not this the amount being discussed is a 'ridiculous money'...

When buying on ebay factor the listed shipping charges into what you are max bidding/ paying. Is it fair, maybe not.. but the higher shipping should = less bid on selling price and offset at end.. or at least that's how I determine my bids

@jdmern..........."Indeed". If to the OP a dollar and five cents is rediculous then ....maybe you should not be buying coins. It is imperative in business that a successful entrepreneur, recovers ALL costs fixed and variable or they might as well work at Ronnie Macs or another Similar McJob. Mentioned many times being a coin dealer is a tough way to make an easy living. Quite simple shopping on ebay , if you do not like what you see as far as price or shipping , move on there is lots of competition.
