1981 nickel has a long raised place against the rim that starts at the bottom left of the bust and runs through IN GOD is this a die break that was polished and continued to use or just Die Deterioration ? Thanks for the look!

Die breaks cannot be polished out.
Once a die is discovered broken, it's retired.
That looks like a dent in the die.

Maybe some die attrition from hitting against the collar? Thanks, Doug.

Thanks buddy and halo1st it looked odd to me mainly because it swallowed up the G I've seen the letters stretched but not swallowed up like that .

I was thinking die damage. That area was snow plowed to form a raised area on the die (incuse on the coin). But I sent Mike a note on this one.

Thanks coop ! Whatever it is it didn't affect the letters across the incuse area but did swallow up the letter G in the raised area closest to the rim of the coin. The raised area is almost at rim height at it highest . But the rim is still round ( no flat spot ) .

It's peripheral die damage, most likely a die attrition error. These sometimes develop burrs along their internal margin, which leaves a crease in the coin.
Error coin writer and researcher.

SO Dave: If you can get an image that is between the set of images you posted, then I could make an education image for your coin to add to my files. The closeups are too close, the full coin shots are too far away. Kind of like this:

Note on the top image how the IN GOD is showing. That will give us a full look at the die damage that struck your coin.

Thanks Mike. That is the first time I've seen burrs on these that created that line.

Probably damaged by hitting the collar at one time.
