Nice and simple...looking at these is kinda rekindling that fire I once had for US coins. Now all we have is a glut of oversized and overpriced sets.

That's a good-looking proof set, TheForce. At least this year we will only have one dollar coin. Perhaps they'll be able to squish the sets into two lenses instead of 3.

You mean you don't want the ultra-mega-super prestige set with every coin in both clad and silver variants of Satin, Brilliant, Cameo, and Reverse proof?

A good looking set. I used to have one just like it. The coins now live in their appropriate Dansco.

Quote:I never wanted all those Presidential dollars and ATB Quarters. Too many designs. I miss the classic eagle reverse on the quarters... I wholeheartedly agree. I do understand how some people would get a thrill collecting all the different designs, and its sure a good way to collect coins with kids. But it sure was nice when all you needed for a complete set per year was one from each mint. And then when something "special" was made, it really stood out. The Bicentennials were amazing to everyone - even people who did not collect coins - simply b/c they had a special design and it was so different to turn a coin over and not see what you expected to. That fun is gone now.

There are so many coin gimmicks out there that I think it has cheapened the hobby or at least makes things undesirable to many collectors.

Dilluted as well, but in part we need new fun stuff to keep people interested, each mint has it's own way of over doing it both Perth and CRM for example.

Then people would complain that designs don't change enough.

Right, you can't make everyone happy.
In the late 90s there was a somewhat similar situation where too many card companies existed with too many product options and too many exclusive offerings.
Combined with many people with disposable income, that worked out just fine.... until there weren't.

Back in those days collecting was very affordable. The proof or mint sets didn't cost much at all. With 2 annual sets you buy each year then you are done. None of that multi design crap.

I did enjoy the Statehood Quarter/Territories program and I also thought the Eagle reverse would return at the conclusion. But near the end the America The Beautiful series was announced. Pretty much at that point I no longer had any interest in quarters after 2009.

They offer the quarters and dollars as separate individual sets for those who only want them. I would be nice if they offered a version of the mint and proof sets without them for those do not want them.

The US Mint should have done what the Royal Canadian Mint did. When issuing commemorative quarters, have just the regular issue quarter in the mint and proof sets. This way you can continue the original base series.
