Pictures say it all... is this what a Retained Cud is? since there is a slight shift/displacement of the 2 pieces of die? Not too familiar with these yet either. Unfortunately the coins condition is no good.. it came from one of those companies that prepackage coins into display packs.... like the kind your grandmother buys off the TV or a catalog and gives them to you for xmas! lol..we all know what I'm talking about right? Well anyway this one I found in a "wartime penny" pack that had like 5 of them in it. I'm still not sure what they do/put on these steelies, but whatever they put on them really is annoying, and I really wish there was a safe/easy way to remove their crap to make the coins look super polished/shiny... or NOT original to those like us....

I think it looks more like a small local die crack.

but am I the only one that thinks its definitely not inline with the rest of the design anymore? as in the piece has shifted slightly from where it was before the break took place? (assuming one did)? I thought that was the "telling" sign of there being a break, versus just being a crack? I dunno, you could be right too. I guess thats why I post all my coin related questions here if I have any doubt!

Retained Cud (displaced) sounds right. Check Cuds on coins web site. It is shiny because it looks like it was most likely re-plated.Looks nice.

The replating pretty much ruined it for a collector. It would have been worth more left alone. The steel cents were plated with zinc. When they shine like that, they scream altered coin!

It does look like there is a slight vertical displacement so yes it is a Retained Cud.

It is a Retained Cud, but sadly little to no value because of the alteration

That is certainly a Retained Cud, but I didn't check to see if it is listed or not. However, it certainly does have value. I sell a fair number of Cuds and while there is a premium for better quality coins, it is my opinion that it is the quality and rarity of the Cud itself that drives the price. I would be surprised if that coin went for less than $10 at auction.

Thanks all for the replies, I didnt expect it to have much value, but at the very least I can now say I found an actual real deal Retained Cud error! Not to mention I can say I own one too and paid only a penny for it! Lol. I figured it was already ruined for most collectors since it was plated, but I did not find it listed on that one cudsoncoins site.

But yes, there is also vertical displacement as well, I took another few pics that show it off very well, zinc plated or not, it's still a pretty piece to look at IMO. I'll see if I can upload those pics today.
