to the family!

Tell you what, it sure do look like one, but...I'm not able to verify it at http://www.coppercoins.com. there is no listing for that amount of SE movement. Is the areas inside a blue looking color? Same outside. Is there a "shelving" effect on the lower mark? This could be MD, a split plating error when MM was punched.

Hi Jason, MD means machine/mechanical damage, that which commonly happens in the minting process. To find out about terms we use, there's a glossary of help in the upper left corner. Use the search function to find previous thread topics. Wealth of knowledge to be had here, from the rest of us idiots too!

Still not sure, I'm waiting for our expert Coop to chime in.

Before I answer, I would like to see a closeup of the date to see if the same thing is going as on the mint mark. If so then it is MD. But if the digits are normal, then I might be a RPM. But if the area in question is flattened, then it goes back to MD. So I need to see more to know for sure what is going on.

If you click on the date you can see it on the digits also.

Then it is probably machine damage from die movement after the strike. The thing about machine damage is that is doesn't have to follow a pattern. It maybe in two different directions at the same strike.

John1, not on date other than slight ghosting, nor seemingly on any other devices. Looking more like an RPM, but still not sure because not finding a previous listed example...

John1, me too. Don't like the "tear(s)" both inside and outside, overstressed?

Note the white areas on the mint mark area. That is where the plating is split. But note the '98' on the date? You can see evidence of Die Deterioration on this die. So That curve on the SE of the mint mark maybe from Die Deterioration along with split plating.
