Hello, I'm trying to identify which RDV this is and could use some help. I've narrowed it down to either RDV-006 or RDV-007 since there is doubling on the Q of QUARTER (I couldn't get this to show up in pictures, but it's visible in hand). I realize that this coin may be too worn and/or the pictures not good enough to say for sure. Unfortunately, I can't really tell if the N in UNUM has a serif. However, it does seem that the feather on the back of the eagle's head is strong enough to have me leaning more towards RDV-007 than RDV-006, though I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong. The other pickup points are too slight for me to feel confident differentiating.

Anyhow, thanks for any help you can provide.

The die is a LDS/VLDS when your coin was struck. What you are seeing on the fields is called die flow. What year is this coin and why are you trying to determine what reverse it is?

I got fed up and threw it in the spending jar, assuming it's not worth the frustration. But I think it was 1970. I was looking for the rarer reverse varieties.

That is the common reverse for a 1970.

Thanks everyone. I had in fact been using that PDF as my reference and still couldn't manage to decide which design was in front of me. Perhaps it'll get easier with practice. And with better looking coins I'm sure it's easier.

The easiest way I have found to determine if it is the rare on is to look at the leaves next to the arrow points. The leaves need to extend above the arrow points. Once you find one you will realize that the design actually appears to be in higher and stronger relief. I have found two and both were 1969 D.

That would have been rdv-006. On rdv-007, the right wings inner edge is quite sharp. Use a 71 or 72 quarter as a reference for rdv-006 as nearly all are that type. All three quarters shown on PCGS coinfacts for the 70-d are rdv-007.

At least I can usually discern the different reverses on State Quarters. ;p
