The 48 has a rim nick over the "V" and slight scratch on the king's face but otherwise looks very nice. It also has about a 10 degree die rotation but I think that is not enough to increase the value is it?
The 47 is dirty but not too beat up. I took a close up of the date in case anybody knows where the dot is supposed to be...I've heard that the dots can be quite small.
Any ideas on grades would be kindly appreciated!

In my observation, small die rotations on 48s are fairly common, like 1 out of 20 or so. Mine is. I assume you photoed both sides level? Also keep in mind that the bottoms of the G and the X need to be level when you check. I've seen several people thinking they had a small rotation when really the obverse is just rotated in the holder.
If I'm seeing what you think is a dot on the 47, it's in the wrong place.
Both coins seem UNC to me as far as wear, but the lack of luster is a concern. Maybe just the lighting? Too bad about the scratches.

There's enough dings on these coins that a careful acetone Qtip will help immensely.

It would have to be the Pointed 7 variety to qualify as a "Dot" 47 dollar..

This coin is a Blunt 47..

Sorry, no way these coins are Unc. Decent mid-AU perhaps, but not MS.

I think both coins would be due for a bath in ye olde acetone bathe.

Acetone bath? Isn't it advised to never clean a coin? I don't want to do something that can't be undone..

Maybe I should have said "perhaps" UNC, scratch, possibly old cleaning. Pending better photos, this is what I see on the 48.

I don't see the characteristic wear across the hair, nor all the surface marks.

If these coins didn't have the dings and marks all over both sides, you really can't harm them with a good cleaning, but if they had very few small marks never clean a coin.
