I own a 1851 "D" Liberty Head gold coin that is just an absolutly gorgeous coin. I have accumulated a pretty extensive collection & inherited a large portion of it. Im looking to sell a coin or a few coins to pay for a swimming pool for my grandchildren. I understand this is a very rare coin in any condition mine being a absolute AU in my opinion as well as 3 other opinions. 2 part question. Should I hold this coin & try to sell a few others because I will have a hard time replacing it or let it go because there are others to be had? The offers ive had are all over the place. One collector said he'd give me $3500 Another said they couldn't buy it now bit its well worth $7000 & a third said it could be sold between dealers for $11,000? I sent pictures to Heritage & they responded next day saying they would like to make an offer on the coin & they would like me to ship it to them for authentication through one of the third party grading company's. I have not responded yet. Im really trying to wrap my head around it all. The pictures are zoomed about 75x so it shows EVERYTHING. The coin in hand or under 10x is amazing. I love this coin but I love the kids more & really want to give them enjoyment. I would appreciate any feedback. Pictures to follow..

TPG authentication is a MUST if you want to receive full value.

yes, wether you decide to sell through heritage or another collector I 100% agree on having the coin certified and graded by either PCGS or NGC to receive fair market value for the coin. You can also upgrade the submission and they will photograph the coin for you, that way you would have high quality detailed photos along with the certified coin to help you sell if you decide I sell to another collector online. If you have other valuable raw coins you are considering selling I would send them in with the Dahlonega

Nice coin; wish I had one! Heritage auction prices for certified examples of this date in AU range from $3300 to $7600 over the last 7 years. Most recent prices are a bit down from a couple years ago. Your coin looks original and uncleaned, with planchet flaws above Liberty's head on the obverse (those shouldn't affect the price much). Cleaned examples are selling in the $2000 range. Heritage prices are a good indication of what collectors are actually willing to pay. Now might not be the best time to sell this coin, considering recent prices look somewhat depressed. Probably a good time to buy though! Your collector offer of $3500 isn't unreasonable IMO. Unless your coin grades MS there is no way it would approach $11,000. As stated, certification is your best bet to ensure you don't sell too low. You might call noted Southern gold dealer Doug Winters and ask his opinion. Good luck! If you have the coin graded please share your result.

Mintage 11254 survival rate 120. Congrats on acquiring this extremely scarce coin. I agree, TPG authentication is a must.

Nice looking '51-D Quarter Eagle. While definitely a scarce coin with a mintage 11,254, it's not a rare coin in the absolute sense, coming out in the middle of the pack among Dahlonega QEs with @ 150-175 known graded by NGC & PCGS. Your coin looks like it's a nice AU-55 coin, judging by the pics. Recent auction records show AU-55s in various levels of preservation trading at $3500 - $4500, depending on the eye appeal of the coin. I recommend you get the coin graded/authenticated by PCGS or NGC before offering it for sale.
