Hi all.
I am in the process of revamping the website of my company. Here is an interesting, although not particularly valuable old counterfeit 8 Reales that I found long ago and that will be included in our upcoming newsletter. Base coin must be pretty scarce since an example (without the countermark) is listed in Gurney et al. as "unique".

A documented reference of this stamp can be found in Dasi, Tomas: Estudio de los Reales de a Ocho (Valencia, 1951), Vol. V p. CLXI.

I wonder how old this actually is, when it was stamped as counterfeit, and what its composition might be. I'm thinking as an issue it might've been intended to be passed into the China trade, but even there it conceivably could rather easily be identified as bogus on account of that date.

Is the edge also a giveaway?

The decree is dated 1883 so these were presumably manufactured a few years before that date since the coins apparently show wear and the stamps do not (as is logical since they were to remove the counterfeits from further circulation).

Nice Carlos!

We see 2-3 Kleeberg Counterfeit 2 Reales with that FALSA type counterstamp. With that denomination it still circulated and the FALSA stamps were worn. Nothing wrong here however with a RAZOR SHARP FALSA!

Another with this MANILA stamp in the upcoming Steve Album auction... What exactly does the "Ca. Nl. Ma." stand for?

Have also seen peninsular Spain 5P from this around time with just a "FALSA" stamp...

It probably stands for Casa Nacional (de) Moneda since the contemporary description states that the stamp was applied at the mint.
Less probable interpretations are Casa Nacional de Manila or Caja Nacional de Manila in my opinion.

Another interesting piece in that Steve Album auction is that debased silver piece with good gold content. RW if you look in the Mexican Numismatic Association Library under Past Journals for my XRF study on Cast 8 Reales of Chihuahua you will also see a debased Cast 8R. These two have the same overall fabric or LOOK (so to speak). I talked to Mike Dunnigan and he suggests it was simply a forgotten or hasten situation at the Mint on why some of these mostly IMO 1811-1812's not 1813's have Plain Edges. This may also be the case say for a stock of these low silver issues which look really crude than most other cast Chihuahua's. We may never know ... this is only the second one I have seen and it seems Albumn did an XRF on it just to see what was going on ... overpriced IMO or over-estimated. Remember also Luis of Aureo & Calico also has the one with two T counterstamps on either side of the bust figure. So plain edges, lower silver content/yet good gold and mintstamps & a mint stamp (T) blunder. I have not heard of a FOURTH mishap for these issues.
