So I was looking through my coin jar and I found this dime from 1979 that has been pressed very close the the rim, also there is some sort of notch in the hair. I am not sure if that was an accident or if it pressed that way. Also the D is filled in.

I believe that poor coin got dragged around in a parking lot.

The filled D, however, might have happened at the mint. There's no way to know for sure since the coin is so damaged, but it is possible that a tiny piece of the die broke off.

As the dies that are used to make the coin wear out, little flaws, such as a 'filled D', start to occur. It is not considered an error but rather a die state.

Hope that helps.

This coin could be damaged, but the side still has grooves, which makes me think this was printed wrong. Also, the "Liberty" and "In God We Trust" are closer to the rim than the normal dime.

The pic you posted of a "normal" dime actually looks like it was struck with a slightly mis-aligned die (MAD) and that's why LIBERTY appears farther from the rim.

The "weird" dime looks normal to me as far as placement of LIBERTY.

Otherwise, I agree with Buddy.

Would also help to know the year on the "normal" dime. because from time to time they modify the hubs and move LIBERTY further from the rim to counter master hub spreading. They made a major chnage reducing the size of the bust and moving the inscriptions in in 2000.

The coin (obverse) is normal for a '79-D.

But this coin is still very very interesting. It is a highly lustrous and beat up AU and these just aren't found in circulation. I've been collecting these from circulation since 1996 and this example is far less wear than I've seen.

It's hard to imagine how it came to exist like this. I lean toward the idea that it was a "lucky coin" or some such thing that was damaged in '79 or the early '80's and has only now gotten back into circulation.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Cool! Thanks for all the replies on this subject. I didn't even realize that the "normal" dime was offset. Good to know.
