I found this in my pocket change the other day and it appears to be missing the copper on the obverse and reverse sides, copper is still present on the rim of the coin. I found this odd, does anyone have any info on what would cause this? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Me too. In the meantime, can you post a pic of the reverse?

Compared with other cents, is this coins diameter larger or normal? Thanks, Doug.

It's not like any mint error I've ever seen. I don't know how, but I think someone, or the environment has removed the plating except for the rim area. Maybe the rim was encased? We have experts on here, but they are experts of mint errors. Once a coin is struck, unless there's a witness it's impossible to know for sure what may have happened to it. I say it's PSD (Post Strike Damage). If it turns out to be a mint error you will know, because our resident expert (Coop) weighs in on incorrect calls.

Im fine with it being PSD if it is. I saw it in my change and it imediately got my attention. If nothing else, its just interesting.

I'd put it in a 2x2. I can recall a few coins I that I didn't, and later wished I had.

The only observation I have is that I see what I think are linear plating bubbles, most noticeably on the reverse running over the memorial diagonally SW to NE. I assume that means this can't be a plating error (unless they are actually roller lines on the zinc and not bubbles). However, I don't know what one that had linear plating bubbles would look like if the plating were removed.

I see what you are saying about the possible linear bubbles. Perhaps through circulation the linear bubbles caused the copper to come off? I had a spare clear snap case so it is now in it. I will call it a keeper just because of the what ifs. Thanks for all the input!

As CoinMasters mentioned, I would certainly like to hear coop's opinion of this.
It would certainly be a keeper for me because of the unknowns at this point.

Try using the search box. I have a few of these and I have seen them posted here more than once. I would like to read Mikes opinion. John1

Looks like an altered coin. On youtube there are links on how to re-color adding zinc to the coin. But the coin was plated. You can see the imperfections on the copper plating and adding the zinc over it, just enhances the linear plating lines. Note on the head. You can see a plating bubble there. It was plated with copper and the gas expanded on the field and head. Then the zinc was added to cover the copper plating. The fields should look flat on the un-plated examples. Note top coins fields.

The mystery thickens as far as this coin goes. Took it to a local shop to have it weighed. Figured if zinc was added it would be heavier, if plating was removedit would be lighter. The coin weighs 2.5 grams

That's what it's supposed to weigh. I now think it's just a normal cent with a discolored obverse and reverse. There are plenty of ways the rim could have been spared.
