I placed a low bid on this coin thinking that it was going to get blown out by the first person with the slightest amount of interest, but somehow, no one showed up and won it for a song. Anyhow, this one is like the other 1861 I bought previously, but couldn't look any more different. Coin diversity I suppose - the two coins probably looked the same at the mint, but not so much today. As usual, please contribute your thoughts on grade and problems. TPG in 48. Thanks! Looks like there's some old cleaning. No opinion on grade.

It MAY have had an old cleaning, but I am not so sure on that. Lovely patination since then! Heavy patination and old wear can completely obscure old underlying luster.
I would agree with AU50.

I don't see any wear on it so I'm going MS-63. When you get these high grades you need to see it in hand to get an accurate grade and see the rub.

AU-50, the obverse scratch is a little distracting.

Nice coin overall. Agree about the scratch. I suppose it makes AU-50 but that weak head would bother me.

Seems like y'all danced around the grade... but were essentially there. I thought it was attractive.

This one arrived. Looked a little more toned than expected. I like it!
