This set Came into the shop. In PVC holders. Quite sad that a whole complete lincoln set (excluding 22 "P") was ruined by PVC.. Please guys and girls. I beg of you that you store your coins correctly.. So the next generation of collectors don't have to frown at key dates because they were damaged by improper storage... I'm just going to show images of the 09-s VBD. Just for kicks what would you grade it? If youd like to see other images feel free to PM me. The set is pending sale... Wow, that's sad, I would put it at F15-VF20 Details.
I don't think any of the top 3 TPGs would grade it because of the PVC damage.

Too bad - what kind of PVC holders were they? Would Verdi-Care help at all? Or has that damage eaten into the coins surface?

What a shame. It could probably improve a little with some conservation but not enough to straight grade. I'd say it's VF Details.

@Mark1959 they were sitting in the holders for many years sadly. PVC albums with slots for the coins. Obverse and reverse directly in contact with the pvc. Verdi-care would not help IMO... The PVC has already eaten away at some of the surface of the coin.

Man oh man, that is SAD. VF details, I'd send it to NCS although I have my doubts whether they'll even attempt to conserve it. I'm afraid the spots are permanent. Nonetheless, even a details SVDB is pretty valuable. Either way, the corrosion must be dealt with ASAP. But I'd use NCS first - if they refuse, you're on your own devices. GOOD LUCK! BTW - It looks authentic to me. I think I see the die chip in the upper loop of the S. That's my favorite diagnostic!

So very sad indeed. Unfortunately coin collectors at the time were not aware of the damaging effects of PVC.

Slight corrosion damage yes, but I don't think PVC damage.

Yeah, not PVC damage IMO. A lot of my earlier lincoln cents came from my local pawn shop, I bought an old 1960s ish album made out of PVC. Those coins had almost a film on them, which went away after a couple treatments with acetone (i'll admit I used a few Q tips as well, not recommended for high value coins)

That is sad. I would still buy the coin, at a reduced rate of course, but it would still make for a good 09-S VDB.

Quote: More like corrosion than PVC damage . One in the same, the degraded PVC residue contains hydrochloric acid which forms copper chloride (a form of verdigris).
