I love Flying Eagles. They're my drug of choice. This is the latest addition to the flock, and would like to hear your thoughts on grade. Thanks!

By flock, I assume you meant convocation.  And I like that coin. Seems a little MAD and probably grades a VF35

I'm with you, Beefer. FEs and large cents are my favorites.
I'd definitely say VF plus. Looks like an off center obverse strike maybe, causing extra rim loss that doesn't jibe with the rest of the coin.

Yes, it's off-center obverse, and it has a woody reverse, but there is something else about the obverse I forgot about.

I'm at VF-25 but I like the woody effect if that's what it is. Trapped dirt in lettering and crevices kinda keeps me from grading a lil higher. But I am no good at grading really.

Of which I was wondering, would removing that crud with a toothpick or other soft pointy thing be acceptable? I've practiced doing that on some LMC's, and it came out good (IMO). Or would acetone be a better choice.

Weak tail from strike, lots of feathers on the body. VF-35 with a good shot at EF-40.

I would say at least VF-35. The flatness on the eagle's tail is due to strike, which often noted on this type. That was one of the reasons why it was only made for three years. That's a nice circulated coin!

Thanks for all the input. I'm pleased with the grade consensus!
This is an 1857 Obverse of 1856, FS-401b. If I can get the gunk out of the date, it may turn out to be an FS-401a, which is a repunched date, but I'm not getting my hopes up for that.

You are correct, this looks to be the Obverse of 1856. I think you are correct in your attribution as I don't see any indications of the repunched date. Nice find!
