Is It Possible To Have A "Run" Of Die Clashes On Jefferson Nickels?

I have a roll of 1958-D Jefferson nickels, and on about half of them (BU) there appears to be a die clash that aligns with "Coop's" overlay. It appears at the "M" on Monticello, and on some faintly through the "O" in Monticello. Nothing is readily apparent on the obverse. Can a die clash continue on subsequent die stamping?

A die clash happens when the dies come together without a blank planchet in the collar of the press. This forces the reverse "impressions" from one die directly into the surface of the other, permanently or until die is polished or replaced. Coins in the run after the "clash" occurs will all exhibit the same clash indication, dependent upon the hydraulic strength which may vary per strike.

Thanks everyone.....that makes a lot of sense.....good to know. I went back through them and 23 of the 40 had the die clash.

That is an interesting find. An original roll?

No.....surprisingly they were in a tube. The original owner must have just transferred them from a bag or OBW and never looked at them.

Nice finds!!

The short answer is yes.

Nice job with the close-up shots.

It can be really difficult to get clashes to show up on photos of nickels, or any small silver colored coin for that matter.

It looks like a lot brush marks -- so after the clash they tried to clean it up but some clash evidence remained.

Goody eye.

Enjoy!

Until they are noticed and the dies are polished to remove the clash marks.

If the marks in the die are light, they can also fade away as the die wears a little as well.
