Hi, I have an ICG pr70 dollar with fingerprints. Is this coin no longer a 70? If so should I just crack it open an remove the fingerprints and put it in a capsule or just leave it as is. .

Chances are it was never a 70 in the first place. ICG is not one of the top 3 TPGers. PCGS,NGC and ANACS. Finger prints are forever unless you get them removed right away. John1

So should I just crack it open, it's basically worthless now right john1. Well it's only worth face now.

Yeah, I'd venture to say it's worth face now. No one wants a proof with fingerprints/smudges. Would it technically be considered an impaired proof now?

Quote:Crack it out and use it as a pocket piece Impaired proofs make great pocket pieces, it's interesting to see how they wear, and a Presidential dollar would be especially interesting since they don't circulate much. You should check out our pocket piece thread. I carry a proof Kennedy half, although I was responsible for impairing it by putting it in my pocket

Graders usually say fingerprints doesn't matter on coins grade. That's a lie ha. They say is the strike that matters not milk spots, smudges etc. As long as is not a scratch. Even if that's the case, no one likes a proof with fingerprints. I basically got the coin for free on a lot on ebay. The lot was for NGC proof 69 Sacagawea dollars, the Presidential dollar was just probably thrown in the lot to make it look a better deal until you look at the reverse. It looks perfect in the obverse but the reverse

Is it worth it to keep it in the slab jbuck or crack it open since the grade in not accurate.

I wouldn't buy a slabbed proof with fingerprints no matter what TPG put it there or what grade. It's good to hear you didn't really pay anything for it. I also like the Pocket Piece idea. I'm thinking of adding a proof nickel (not impaired, yet) to my pocket.

You got that coin for free because the seller knew he could not sell a PR-70 with prints and smudges . The best idea so far is to crack it out and use it as a pocket piece .

Is it possible the fingerprints were not really visible when it was slabbed? (do fingerprints start out kind of 'invisible' then darken as the coin deteriorates?)

I crack it open and remove the fingerprints with goo gone spray gel cleaner. It's nice enough to put it in a capsule.
