I'm sure this topic has been covered at some point in the past, but I couldn't find it by searching.

Tell us, who is your favorite U.S. coin designer / engraver and why their designs appeal to you. Thanks.

Adolph Weinman:

How can you beat the designs for beauty? We STILL use his WLH OBV to this day.

I wish the mint currently had artists possessing just half of AW's talents for attractive design.

As an example, can you see the current Jefferson OBV ever being used for a large silver dollar coin?

Second would be Frank Gasparro for the post-silver era. The back of the Kennedy half and the incredible REV design of the Eagle landing on the moon are patriotic and have a lot of eye appeal to me.

Thanks, Earle. You certainly picked two of the "biggies". I must agree with your observations. The WLH was the first coin that really piqued my interest in coins as a hobby. Beautiful, classic design. And those eagle on the moon designs were very appealing to someone who grew up during the Apollo program.

My personal favorite is James Longacre. Probably because I am a cent and Liberty junkie! He groomed a great crop of designers who followed.

I have to admit I don't know their names, but I've got to vote for the designers of the Standing Liberty quarter and the Mercury dime. I like the obverse and reverse on both coins.

Thanks for the reply, Coinmaster. Two nice designs to be sure. The "Mercury" dime is the work of the great A. A. Weinman of Walking Liberty half fame. I had to look up the designer of the Standing Liberty quarter. His name was Hermon MacNeil. As far as I can tell, it was his only coin design. He is better known as a statue artist and his work can be found around Washington, DC, most notably on the supreme Court building.

Thanks for the info, Bump. Yes, a lot of art all around DC, a nice zoo too.
