This BU 1878-CC Morgan has a conspicuous vertical line on the Obverse and quite a few bag marks. Any opinions on grade and/or details are greatly appreciated. BTW, the seller told me the line is raised not a scratch. And, the seller is a top notch dealer from other purchases. http://www.ebay.com/itm/302373277004?_mwBanner=1

HMM I'm not sure what to say about the line on the obverse...what worries my about this is the date position. I looked on VAM World and tried to match it up. The date on this one is way too far to the right IMO. Doesn't match any of them. I wouldn't touch it and my hunch is it is a counterfeit...just my opinion though. Let's see what others say as I am far from a pro a spotting fakes.

Hard to believe that line is raised, but either way this is not a very attractive example. If the line IS a scratch, it could well be a details coin, imho.

IMO even if the coin turns out to be genuine it's still really chewed up. I think with all that damage (that's way more than just bag marks) it is MS60 quality if not details like Mr Frog mentioned - and based on the prices for MS60 1878 CC Morgans that coin isn't worth the asking price.

For me...it's all in the eye appeal.
And this coin is lacking so I would keep shopping.

Thank you everyone! Something in my gut said pass too. I don't think NGC would grade this coin without details either. I'm really glad I posted this now. The search continues!

The long line is most likly a stupid staple scratch. Miss Liberty looks like she was in a serious cat fight.
I'd pass too!

It appears authentic but I would grade it MS62 details at the most due to the scratch and the extensive marks, nicks, and dings.

I really had a difficult time grading this particular coin. IMO, the bag marks, strike, and overall condition made it an MS61-62. But, the line (scratch) made it a details coin. On the other hand, if this is a raised line, I wondered if it could be an error of some kind. Either way, as other members have already mentioned, the eye appeal is unacceptable.

If it were a raised line than it would be a pretty significant die scratch. One would think it would be mentioned as a VAM marker. I have looked at most of them and as of yet I have not found one that mentions it or even shows it in the whole coin shots. Here take a look http://www.vamworld.com/1878-CC+VAMs
