Poll Question
I bought 2 half mint sets (Denvers only), with the thought of breaking them to fill holes in the Franklin and Washington albums. But I feel like breaking up a family that's been together for 50+ years.
Do you/would you break up mint sets for a nice album coin?

I've broken apart every mint and proof set since 1964 to put in my albums. I'm not going to stop now.

As expensive as the mint sets are versus face, they still represent a better value versus buying the coins individually on the secondary market or buying rolls. Plus, the quality of the coins is usually better than what you'd get on the secondary market or out of circulation. I cut one set up and keep one intact.

Twice I bought 1970 mint sets to get the '70-D half dollar. I still have them intact. I bought the 70-D as a single coin. Just couldn't cut up the mint sets.

I want to, but I just can't find the courage. I have Mint Set, Proof Set, Brown and Blue Ikes and an album to put them in. For whatever reason I just can't bring myself to break open a single set or coin.

I would never break up one of my own mint sets, but I've bought several coins from a dealer who broke them out of mint sets. As lots of recent GB coins have only been issued in mint sets, the only way to get a complete date run in an album is to break up sets. I did once buy a set deliberately to break it up. In 1994 I was waiting in the line at my local post office (which had a philatelic / numismatic counter in those days) and I spotted a 1992 'Baby' or 'Wedding' pack with a BU set of coins in the bargain bin. The packaging was badly creased and damaged (the coins were perfect) and the price was about 50p above face value. The Britannia 50p and the bronze 1p and 2p coins in the set were never issued for circulation, and the Commemorative EEC 50p from the set is now selling regularly for over £60 on ebay! (And I still have a complete unbroken 1992 BU set)

I've only broken up one mint set by cutting out the nickels and leaving the rest intact (1972). I have bought many nickels that were already cut out of the mint sets by someone else, though. I cracked quite a few proof sets. With some, I wanted one or two coins out of it and others (like Statehood Quarters) I'm simply moving all of them from separate cases to one album. I'll also be cracking a couple more sets so I can submit individual coins for grading soon. So, Yes.

I have never broken apart a mint set, but I've broken apart a proof set. I did it mostly because the packaging was broken already. I put the cent in my album and the rest of the coins in 2x2s. I think it was a 1978 proof set?

I usually buy a few sets, cut up one for albums and keep two in OGP.

My vote goes to 'no.' I only have three mint sets (all Canadian), and I have no reason to break them up; I prefer to either find the coins I need for my date sets in circulation or buy them all separately.

Yes I buy one to keep and one to break apart. And....I spend the proof coins I do not need.

I've broken up sets to fill holes but, only if I have another set to keep together. I've broken sets for only one coin and leave the rest in the OGP and put them in a separate box for broken sets.

I am mostly known for breaking proof sets to fill my albums and I typically want to get business strikes from circulation, but I have ripped apart a few mint sets in my days.
