I was noticing that hit as well on the collar. Looks overall a decent coin. The seller is asking about $53 and free shipping. My old RedBook says MS-63 is $85 and MS-65 is $110.

Monticello looks a bit worn out, so I wont grade as high, MS-60.

Mac looks like it took a rough ride in the bag, think that $53 is a bit steep for it...offer $30 top if you like it, I wouldn't.

I was gonna say MS64. I believe RedBook is $70 for this because it looks like the reverse of 1940. If it's MS63, then it drops to $38.

Clean fields, hardly any hits, frosty luster and probably good eye appeal.
At least 65

Normal weaker strike for this date and mm. No hint of cleaning or dipping. The rat chew on his collar would bother me. The price is too high for this. In fact, if you look at PCGS or NGC examples you can find some nice ones for less than that price.

TheForce ... This is always going to be a key coin in your set. I have been following you a little and I know you have the bug. My advice is get the best 1939 D that you like. Then you will always like it, and it is an important yard stick in your set and always will be. Be very picky about which one you get because if something bothers you about this or any other coin, it is probably always going to bother you until you get another. I think that hit on the Jeffersons collar is maybe a struck through? This is MS but is a weaker strike and has the steps of the 1940 Reverse. It should be sharper. Here's some stats on the 1939 P D S Nickels The percentage below refers to the proportion of that type that was minted for that year. For example 1 out of 10 1939 P nickels have the reverse of the 1938 Jefferson nickel which has the "wavy" steps. On the other hand, it is much easier too to find any 1939 full step nickel with the type 2 reverse. So here, you have a more common reverse and it still lacks good steps. 1939 P Type 1 Rev of 1938 10% 1 in 400 having 5 full steps. 6 steps unknown. 1939 P Type 2 Rev of 1940 90% scarce but much more available than TY 1 having 5 full steps. 6 full steps very rare.
1939 D Type 1 Rev of 1938 25% 1 in 150 having 5 full steps. 6 steps unverified. 1939 D Type 2 Rev of 1940 75% 1 in 10 5 full steps. 6 full steps very rare.
1939 S Type 1 Rev of 1938 55% 1 in 100 having 5 full steps. 6 steps unverified. 1939 S Type 2 Rev of 1940 45% 1 in 10 5 full steps. 6 full steps very rare.

Thanks again for the comments. The pickings on this coin via ebay is slim for the price I would pay. In the past I have broken coins out of slabs but they were low cost. Some of these are $100+ and I'm not sure I could bring myself to crack it open. I did see on ebay a PCGS M-62 for $49.99. If I got that I probably wouldn't mind busting it open. Others I have seen are $60+ raw.
