I never see a 2009 of any denomination in circulation.
Maybe 2 or 3 coins in the last 8 years....

Since they were released, I have only found one 2009 American coin in circulation (a 5 cent piece minted in Denver). Granted, I found it in Canada. If one of those things made their way up to me, I would just assume they are not that rare.

I was at the duty-free shop at Barbados cruise port in 2014 and got a 2009-P nickel in change when buying some duty free goods. I think I've read somewhere that a supply of 2009-P nickels went to Puerto Rico, so perhaps that's how I got one in Barbados!

They're out there. Minted in the hundreds of millions, they're not even remotely rare.

Quote: They're out there. Minted in the hundreds of millions, they're not even remotely rare. The combined mintage for dimes was 146 million and for the nickel it was 86.64 million. Although not rare by strict numbers if you consider that the following year each mint for the nickel made well over 200 million and the year after that it was well over 450 million minted. Comparatively not very abundant and ripe for hoarding.

I get a penny or two, but nickels and dimes are far and few between in roll hunting.

Quote: Source? I don't know if a "good portion" of them went to Puerto Rico, but when the first coins started appearing on the market back in 2009, they were being sold by someone in Puerto Rico that had gotten two or three bags of nickels and dimes from the bank there. For about a month he was the only source for them on ebay.

So my husband surprised me with some rolled nickels today and to both our surprise we got a 2009s. As well as a 1074s and a 1941s. Only searched 4 rolls. Very happy finds today. Still need that 2009p though.

I'm impressed mintage quantity has spread so widely - it's been an ongoing curiosity of mine why I see so few in circulation. Thanks for starting the topic! :)

I've come across only one 2009 nickel in my life, a Denver. 2009 dimes I also find to be scarce but not as much so, I've gotten 5 or 6 between each mint. The quarters are uncommon but by no means scarce, and I don't bother hoarding the pennies because they're much too common IMO.
