I believe I have the orientation correct on these photos, but let me know if I've gotten that wrong. In any case, I'm not seeing any obvious match from coinage of the Ch'ing Dynasty, so might this predate that period? Plucked from a "junk" bin, so if it's in fact a phony I'm not going to be too put out.

Additionally curious in that it almost appears to have relief chopmarks at a few points along the rim.

The wide rims of the coin looks like it's from Japan not China.

Definitely Korean, I think early or mid 1800s?

You can use this as a starting point:

This is a Sangpyeong Tongbo from the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. This is a 1 cash coin and was minted in mid-Joseon Dynasty. Here in Korea, this is worth about $1.

I can give you the exact year, mint, and ID number when I get home. This one is far along after the minting of this coin started at the particular mint, as the reverse has four characters. There is the character for 5 as well which indicates which furnace it was made. Either way, more information when I get home.

Update: I stand corrected, this coin in particular is worth ~$5 here in Korea. According to the K&C Korean Coin Catalogue we have here in Korea this is Catalogue No 18.299, coin #5 of 10. These were minted beginning in the year 1731 AD (Yeongjo Yr 7) at the Treasury Department of the Joseon Dynasty. For your referenced the first picture you have is the obverse and the second the reverse. The four characters on the reverse of your coin from the top in a clockwise fashion are the Mint Mark (Treasury Dept) > Furnace Group > Branch of Mint > Sexagenary Cycle. The last two characters can be switch out with others like the Date In or Index No of Issue, etc. The marks you are seeing all over the coin are also common with this type of coin and are not anything too special. If you have any other questions please let me know. Good find!
