Is this a good deal for $228? I am considering buying it, getting it graded, and reselling it, but I need opinions. I've never done this before.

Tough call. If you are looking at it in hand, and think it will grade 64 or higher, good deal. Otherwise, not so good.

Exceptionally strong strike, full head. It may be the photos, but the luster seems a bit subdued and it does not flow as it should.

This is an easy MS-65 Full Head.

The only thing I would worry about is the potential for it to have been dipped.

Maybe 64/65 but that strike is extremely good. A good buy just for the full head no details missing beauty.

I would certainly gamble $228 on that beauty.

Please provide your own photos as comparison should you purchase it. I would be interested in comparison between yours and theirs.

I've found that 1917-P type 1 usually have a nice strike .
This one is a beauty .But this raw 100 year old coin should have some kind of toning , was it dipped ? Chinese counterfeit ? Wait for the experts before you commit yourself .

Like T-BOP said, I'm concerned it's dipped now. Any opinions?

If I was going to buy the coin to flip, I would not be concerned with a dip. I would be concerned with the flat spot on the lower part of the shield and the discolor on the leg above the knee as these areas could be wear that is not clearly visible. If the coin grades AU58, you have paid top dollar for a raw AU58. If you buy the coin, return privileges would be a must in case it is a AU58. The coin is worth the risk if you have return privileges.

Definitely a nice coin. Looks like a black and white image so really can't see toning or luster variances. I see a potential problem above the "We" in "In God We Trust", and rim problem at around 3 o'clock (and down a little) on the obverse. Also if you look above the ankle and scan to the right, it shows hallmarks of being cleaned. Ask for a color image before you buy, just my 2 cents.

Well, looking at it in hand is better than color photos. I bought it and I'm not worried because I can return it. Should come on Tuesday.

Agreed, in hand definitely beats photos. Please post a photo when you receive the coin, I'm always interested in how coins appear to the eye compared to photos. I'm going to start posting photos of my coins here for grading but truth be told, I'm never happy with my photos since they never seem to capture the look of the coins with the complete accuracy of the eye and loupe.
