Only the circumstances under which I came across this merits posting it, the condition being toward the low end of the scale. As part of the small group of otherwise modern coins I selected, this ended up setting me back a whole 10˘.

I believe it to be an antoninianus of Gallienus, although I haven't made a precise catalog identification. Looks to possibly be Fortuna holding a rudder on the reverse. The color is rather more brassy than the dark bronze hue you normally see, for which I have no explanation.

Worthy of a junk in, but if it was in the right priced junk bin, I would have snapped it up anyway.

I love poor condition ancients, and the challenge they present to fully attribute.
That way, you can buy 'em cheap, and increase their value with the attribution.

Being able to hold a piece of history such as that in your hand for only 10 cents is amazing no matter what market value is.

I had just come to the same conclusion regarding the reverse legend.

It'd be hard to do anything but increase the value on this specimen, but in any case, I tentatively have it as RIC 193 (Sear 10219).
