Hi Everybody...California here!

I started collecting 1 year ago. Only in 1oz gold coins and bars so far. I purchased the Fisch tester, NM52 magnet (1" cube), caliper, scale right off the bat!

So far I feel pretty confident with all my purchases based on all passing tests with exception of the sealed proof coins and bars from ebay resellers and APMEX which I'm actually tempted to open now!

Today I was playing around and opened up my box of APMEX purchases. I noticed when I ran the 1983 vs the 2000 canadian 1 oz maple through the fisch ringer the 2000 sounded like a 24k should but the 1983 thudded! Like a tungsten thud! I reweighed and re-calipered and it checks out to the T. Am I missing anything here. Then I thought to run the NM magnet on all my APMEX coins and bars...they don't stick and I feel no resistance but when I moved the magnet back and forth over the coins/bars the shifted a little....I'm out! Am I crating a magnetic field that the gold is resisting hence the movement or has APMEX figured out a way to fool the entire world? Some of my 24k buffaloes and canadian bears/wolf do not move at all along with my Krugerrands!!

Any input or comments would be appreciated. Has anyone encountered or done the same test I just did?

Thanks again!

You need to at least get it back to APMEX just to find out what they say about it.
It may be difficult to prove that APMEX supplied it to you, unless you have a record that verifies the sale of that particular item to you.

Hope it works out ok for you.

I am a little confused... are you saying that ALL coins and bars you have ever bought from APMEX "shift a little", but all purchases from all other sellers don't shift?

APMEX is a very respected and high volume metals dealer, so no.
Granted I own very little gold but I have purchased quite a lot of
different silver coins from them over the last few years.
All without any doubt at all and 100% confidence.
If you are uncomfortable with something just give them a call tomorrow.

I have been buying gold coins from APMEX for many years and have never had any problem with their items, both pre-1933 U.S. and 1oz AE's.

I've never used anything but a scale and caliper on my gold. Your Maple Leafs should appear exactly the same visually and if they do there's nothing to worry about. These coins, and most coins, are far too thin to have a tungsten core. If they could millions would be in collectors hands right now. Large bars that can be drilled, hollowed and filled with tungsten are a possibility if you buy 10oz or larger gold bars.

I know I'm new but I cannot believe there's anything wrong with an authentic 1983 1 oz Maple. If there was, you wouldn't be the first to discover it - you'd easily find the evidence on the 'net.

find yourself a coin shop/bullion dealer or a jewelry dealer who has an XRF machine.
Feel free to call me Will.

I have my doubts. All fake Maples up to this point have either been out of weight/dimensional spec, or obviously not genuine for anyone familiar with the striking of the real deal. Tungsten blanks with a thin layer of fine gold are known to exist though.

Thanks Everybody for your comments. Yes I'm skeptical too that this 1983 maple is a fake.....I mean it looks scales and measures like the real deal. I just can't explain why it makes no noise on the ringer. To answer another question...most shift(ever slightly) when I move an NM52 magnet over the top back and forth...except for the Chinese Pandas, American Buffalo and Pearl Harbor Commemorative I bought on ebay (the Krugerrand's and the American Eagles do not shift at all). The APMEX 1 ox bar shift. Can or has anyone done a similar experiment? Ill do a you tube video and post it of what I'm talking about. Thanks

Thanks

XRF won't be of any use in this case; the gold covering may be exactly the same as the bullion coin, that is, .999 fine.

XRF only tests the metal in the surface of the object; it is incapable of picking a tungsten core, which is of the same density as gold.

I suspect that APMEX have been a little lax in checking everything they sell.

I had always assumed XRF could "see" a little deeper into items, but sel is correct, it can't. It's basically a surface tester. The only way to be positive, in addition to conventional methods, is something like an Olympus ultrasonic tester...starting at about $10,000 and going up from there.

I do not know if X-Ray testing or ultrasonic testing has been used to detect tungsten cores.

X - Ray testing has been used for decades to find internal flaws in metal parts (such as aircraft engine parts and critical to safety air frame parts), for decades.
