I look at it as they ended a 224 year steak of no mint mark on cents. This is also to be a one year issue so next year there will not be a mint mark on the cent. To me they either should have done it for all years or no years at all. None of this one year only stuff. As someone who suffers from OCD the mint mark being a one year thing bothers me as now my philly mint run of cents will have a small blot on it.

with that! I'll do you one better. I still can't get my mind wrapped around that shield!! I probably should but I don't even know what that shield represents. It doesn't even look American to me. I've seen better engraving and designs come out of 3rd world countries coins. Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm not buying any but I save the ones I get in change. I wonder if some day they will be worth anything?

How many "billions" are expected to be minted? One for every human on earth?

I'm not a big fan of the shield cent but... Quote: I probably should but I don't even know what that shield represents. It doesn't even look American to me. From 2010lincolncents.com: Quote: The Union Shield features thirteen vertical stripes joined by a single horizontal bar with the inscription "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one). This symbolizes the original thirteen states joined together in a single union. A scroll appears across the shield with the denomination "One Cent" and "United States of America" appears above the shield.
The same legislation that had authorized the four different different designs issued for 2009 had also authorized the new reverse design for 2010. This final design is intended to be emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single and united country. The selection of the Union Shield design was officially announced by the US Mint on November 12, 2009.

I really don't know why mint marks would ever be omitted from any coin. Why they are NOT on pennies but every other denomination is beyond me.

Don't thank me, I just googled it after your statement. I didn't know either and never really gave it much thought. I felt the same way. I was just to lazy to look it up. I just never cared about it and was never impressed with it. Thanks again!

I'm so "unimpressed with the shield cent it's the one I don't even bother looking for any DDO / DDR or any other cracks, Cuds and cruds on the silly things, all I can say about the P, somebody decided to "P" on it. Probably be last year for it anyway, sad ending to the series.

You're welcome, then, USSID18. I have so many questions but, regarding the P mintmark being on the 2017 cents, is that considered a "design change"? If so, would it have to have been legislated? It came off as a "surprise" and I don't see where that fits in to the history of coinage design changes. Is this something that the BEP could implement without congressional approval?

I think if they are going to start using the P, then they should keep using the P. By what logic do they use the P on quarters, nickels and dimes (among others) and NOT the cents?

It does not matter to me, still a 2017 cent. AS for the Shield, just part of the 50 year change for the Lincoln Cent. 50 years of Wheats and 50 years of Memorial. When I was a kid, many were pulling out the Wheat cents and did not like the Memorial cents. Quote: Is this something that the BEP could implement without congressional approval? FYI BEP - Bureau of Engraving and Printing makes currency. Two facilities Wash DC and Fort Worth TX. U.S. mint makes coins Four current facilities. P/D/S/W
