About four months ago when I was at the coin shop , I was shown a Morgan dollar with a real nice die crack on the reverse. The person that showed it to me did so because he knew I like that sort of thing, so it was no surprise that I paid the 15 dollars or so to take it home with me. After a little research (very little actually- it is near the top of the list) I found out it was an 1887-P "Donkey Tail" variety..VAM 1A.. As far as I can tell, worth about 200-300 in VF- Needless to say, I was very happy ! I doubt that coin will ever leave my collection, so it's "worth" is irrelevant for now.

Best-Deal-Ever

Most of the regulars here know that story, so here's one more I remember from when I still bought things on that online auction place. Near the end of my buying online, I was searching more for lots since I was not buying high dollar coins, and spending 4 dollars to ship one 10-20 dollar coin seemed silly to me. I was never disappointed with any of the lots I did get (surprisingly) but one stuck out to me. I think I paid $20 for the lot of ten coins. When I got the lot I saw a couple silver coin, a couple wheats,a War Nickel or two, and an Indian cent in a 2x2. The Indian cent was labeled 1908...but when I turned it over it was a 1908-S ! It is maybe VG-F, but worth much more than the 2 bucks I paid for it, even the 20 for the whole lot ! I did wrestle with this for a bit, wondering if the seller made a mistake, but I figured the 2x2 was probably labeled before he sold it since none of the others were in 2x2's, and if he didn't check it...good for me. I don't have a pic of that one and it does not reside here (very few do) I like to keep the bulk of my collection ....not here ! Next time I get the urge to look at stuff I have not for awhile, I'll snap a couple and put it up .

I guess I got a good deal on my 2001 Buffalo coins...even from the mint, since they are worth about 150 each or better now...does that count ? How about the 25 dollars I paid for 25 double-edge letter Adams coins (from the bank) those went for about 80 bucks each at the time...oh and 1 Plain edge for a dollar too...I guess some deals fall in your lap, some are sheer luck, and some are from your vast knowledge that gives you the edge over the next guy. And these things are why I love this hobby so much..the thrill of the chase gets us all !

bought 20 walking liberty's, 1941 through 1947, on an ebay auction last month for $70. So I go through them the other day and there is a 1918-D in VG and a 1942 in XF, was pretty happy about that.

Are you referring to "pocket change" and/or uncirculated rolls from the bank)?...

One was buying a collection of silver coins from a lady here in town. I made an offer sight unseen based on a certain amount per coin (i.e. $13 or so per silver dollar back when silver was around $15/ounce, $5 for halves, etc) and found a 1894-P Morgan in VF in the collection.

Also bought out a local dealers "junk" silver dollar box for a fixed price of about $17/each. Most were common coins, but I did find a 1899-P silver dollar in EF condition in the lot so I was happy.

Pocket Change. I have not gotten a roll from a bank in at least ten years or more! I have been thinking about it a lot since I came to CCF though!

I recently bought a lot of 450+ world coins for eighty-something bucks plus shipping. The melt value if the silver in it was worth that much. I'd say the average book value of the coins was at least a dollar a piece.

One of by best deals was a group of about 30 copper penny rolls I bought for face value. All were uncirculated. In the group I found one roll of 1957 Wheat Pennies. Most will agree when you cant go wrong buying coins for face value, even 700 wheaties for $4 is a heck of a deal! -PP

My sister works for a company that sends people out to homes to do 'energy audits'

Long story short, one of the techs did an audit for a guy. Well instead of tipping him the usual 5 bucks or so, he gave him a 1882 O Morgan in VF.

The tech was 'offended' at the dollar tip, so he gave it to my sister who gave it to me.

Cheapest Morgan I ever got haha.
