I recently visited my mom during and after surgery for about 5 days and a lot of the post-op time was spent in conversation. Since this is a new hobby of mine, I brought it up.

She mentioned some other family members who had some small collections and my brother, who had a small collection from childhood at the house. I borrowed what he had there so I could investigate further and see if I can apply my new-found knowledge to find anything special and either let him know what he has or offer to buy.

My mom had a few things there that she had held on to for some time. She generously asked if I wanted them. Ummm, yes! She said they weren't doing her any good. So, this was my reward for "coming out":

5 clad Ikes she won in Vegas in 1978:

These, of course, will be added to my collection. Maybe I'll put an asterisk or something on them for provenance.

I created a provenance label! All it took was a little creativity with the Mexico City mintmark. What do you think?

@spruett, nice haul you got there! I really like the concept of including provenance on these coins. A couple years back I started including this information on all of my new coins as I think that this could prove useful down the road.

@spruett, glad you had the chance to be with your mom during her surgery. Hope she is doing well. It is nice you were able to share your collecting passion with her.

It is amazing what our parents have kept over the course of time. My father had a small collection of ASEs, Kennedy halves, Ike's, small dollar coins, and a few foreign coins. My wife's mother had a small stash of silver - mostly Mercury dime and early Washington quarters.
Rest in Peace

I would also recommend attaching some note of where these coins came from. At some point you might pass them on, too.

I write a code that tells me when it was paid for (first number) who it was purchased from (I keep a log that includes the invoice), and the price paid.

So 170823/345232 tells me all of that at a glance, and I can obtain the invoice in a minute.

I did not get past the five Ikes. Was there anything else interesting posted?

I kid, of course. A very nice selection with the added sentimental value.
