What is it with this 1890 Large Cent? Had this coin for a long time and I always wondered about it? This coin has no wear at all but it looks like it must of been soaked in something or is a very weak strike or something. Also the bust seems to be doubled? Any idea ? Thanks to all that will give their opinion! MG

Might be an early stage acid dipped coin. Is it light weight?

It looks like it had been buried, now with corrosion. And it looks like machine/ Mechanical Doubling

Quote: It looks like it had been buried, now with corrosion It seems pretty common to come across Canadian LC's which have been exposed to harsh environmental damage, and then been "restored" with equal harshness - must be much more acidic soil conditions up there. This coin appears to be one of those.

I'm going To say acid . The devices look very wonky. They appear to sit higher than normal. I have no reason to believe the die created this effect. The doubling on the other hand would be Md imo.

That is the classic look of a coin that has been "whizzed". The process moves metal to the edge of letters and devices giving them a raised edge look.

All of the beads look kind of conical ..so I'm in the acid bath group..
Knowing the exact weight would help us..

Thanks for all the reply's. I did weight this coin and it does look like it is the normal weight for this coin just under 6 grams, but I don't have the best of scales!

whizzing seems to be the best explanation, even at the front of the neck the metal rises straight up rather than tapered. I looked up whizzing seems to be similar effects on this one? Too bad but good for learning.

The usual higher grades in the 1890 cents have such a strong and thick date,..that's why I went with an acid bath..

Fields are too consistent to be whizzing... count me in the acid bath camp for this one...
