I'll admit, this has very limited eye appeal, but it was priced accordingly, and I needed one for the CSS set I'm working on without breaking the bank. It's in a basement slab which has seen better days, all of the white-ish cottony blemishes are on the slab, not on the coin. I'm going to either get this graded, or get a new generic slab for it. What would you grade it as? Try not to hit it too hard for it being super ugly!

I am not seeing the ugliness in this coin what so ever. If anything, I would pay extra for it, because it looks so good.

I wouldn't, because I can't afford even a regular Lafayette dollar (not In anything resembling such good condition, anyway). And I think there's some ugliness on the cheek of the foreground guy. Could be on the slab, though - hard to say. I entirely agree otherwise, however.

Nothing wrong with the eye appeal unless you like bright shinny coins. AU-50

If you like slabbed coins, then send this one to a leading TPGrader, such as PCGS.
It could come back entombed as MS62, but there is some scuffing on the patina, which may reveal a tiny amount of wear, when examined in hand under 10x magnification.
Irrespective of what grade it come back as, potential value will justify shipping and slabbing fees.

Agree the toning is attractive but I suspect AT. Some bumps on neck that could be die rust, but unusual by 1900.

53 at best, but no hint of cleaning or dipping which is a HUGE problem for these.
There are tons of uglier ones than this. Get it out of that scuffed holder. This one is worth submission to NGC or PCGS.

That's an original 120 year old au coin. Nothing wrong with the eye appeal other than the photo and the crappy damaged slab. Photographing dark toned coins is tricky. Many times what looks like black toning ends up being cobalt blue, russet red and darker purple toning. Buying dark AU coins based off of pics is somewhat of a gamble. If you prefer cleaned coins you can always dunk it in your preferred chemical of choice. A link to coin would help. I took a gamble on this sld based off of the following pics. Once I got it, I couldn't have been happier. The pictures look like someone lit it on fire. In hand, that's not the case.

That is not a bad looking Lafayette...I am actually trying to talk my slush fund into a similarly toned (darker than I am accustomed to) Seated dollar...my slush fund is winning the discussion at the moment. That is a good looking Seated dollar as well, MikeF...the only thing missing is a "S" mintmark.
