Poll Question
I've been thinking of buying something off of ebay lately. (I don't know what forum is belongs in, you'll see why later) I am debating between getting an OBW of 1960 D pennies, (to look for RPM's) and getting an uncleaned ancient coin. Whaddya think? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I would find a decent seller first who will sell the coin at the price the condition of the coin warrants. 95% of Dealers esp ebay and other sites M A Coins couldn't grade if they had 2 +60 Loupee strapped across their eye sockets :) To them gouges are just character of the coins lols yer right I'll buy that. Find one buy something lowball and build from there. Don't buy unsorted lots because for definite they have been sifted by loads of hands and its junk with bonus coins to make them look good. Unless it is from a seller who doesn't usually sell coins. There are bargains there to be had.

With all due respect, I find this to be a strange poll. You should buy the thing that interests you the most, not what we think has the most merit. This is aside from the merits of the individual ebay seller. Of course, as has been suggested, you have to be quite selective and careful. But the best buy in the world may not interest you at all.

Buy whatever you want if you like it.

Quote:Something else: avoid buying offen ebay. I'm also almost entirely uninterested in OBW rolls (and what little interest I do have is very negatively impacted by the idea of opening those rolls to look at the contents, which you apparently intend to do), and as for uncleaned ancients, they're usually not worth the shipping unless bought in bulk (exceptions exist, but they're effectively limited to cherrypicks, which you're apparently not looking for). So I can't recommend either of your two choices anyway. OTOH, I've seen some really nice bargains on ebay (mostly the more exotic world coins in lower grades) that I would've bought if I was able to (sadly, I really don't want to deal with PayPal, which severely limit my opportunities on ebay... the only time I negotiated with someone to buy a coin from ebay, I ended up proposing sending them money by courier daisy chain, because that was pretty much the only possibility I could think of that wasn't unacceptable to me, ebay, or both - and ultimately, the coin ended up being sold to someone else, for a higher price than I could afford, before we could finish our negotiations). [EDIT: fixed weird typo]

Yes your question is a bit odd . You say your a coin collector , if you have extra money burning a hole in your pocket then buy what you collect or what interests you the most . If it was me I wouldn't buy either one ,but I'm not a YN like you . You don't need to ask us what you should buy. Don't be afraid of getting burnt over an inexpensive purchase . Most of us been there, done that and that's how we learn , by our mistakes .

I think you should hang onto your money until you know what you want because one day something you really like will be for sale and it will be a good deal and you will have spent your money.
Of course, if you just can't wait, there are some intriguing ancients for sale right here by a fellow CCF member. Some have already been sold to other members but there are still some left.

In my opinion I would not buy the cent roll because, knowing ebay, it would probably have been searched.

Is there really a such a thing as truthful "Original Bank Wrapped" rolls on ebay anymore? And trying to clean an uncleaned ancient like a professional is so time consuming and frustrating. I say get a cleaned ancient - there are many on ebay that are extremely nice for between 10 & 20 $.

I wouldn't tell you what to do, but I will say that you should already know yourself what you want when you do buy. When I get fixated on something and am hunting it down, it is a lot of fun for me to get a great price for the best I can find. I don't have any regrets unless it turns out to be significantly worse than expected, which does not happen often. At the last coin show I went to, I had a short list of what I wanted to buy and ended up with 80% of it filled. I am still very happy with what I got that day. I left one coin sit because it was too much. A little patience and I got one just as good at less than half price since. If you narrow your wanted coin(s) down to a few choices and have some to compare, I have seen people post which one they are considering with images here on CCF. People were pretty good about saying which one they liked best out of the group. But still, you should make the final call in the end.

For starters, never, ever buy a single uncleaned ancient off of ebay unless you have been in the game long enough to know what you are doing. If you want an ancient to collect, get a single, high grade example for a little more. If you want identification experience, buy a job lot of coins for ~$0.75 per coin.
