Hi I'm new here. I wouldnt say I'm a collector. I do hang on to coins that stick out to me in every day normal hamdling of change. Ive had some for quite a long time and never had a place to inquire about them until I just accidentally came across this forum. Anyways, could someone help me out with this penny? It appears to be a 1964 but the 4 is is just sort of solid with no hole in the 4. Maybe even slanted. Can someone tell me what's going on here? Thanks. Sorry the picture is so awkward looking ha ha ha Its the best I could do

Seen that problem on cents before. Crimping fingers from the rolling machine have hit the 4 and pushed some metal to the left. I know spreutt posted some of his coins that had this problem a while ago.

It looks like damage from a Coin Wrapping Machine. When the roll was crimped, the 4 took a hit and some of the metal was pushed inward.

Edit: here's one of those that Mark1959 referenced.

No problem. I added one of those pics you mentioned.

@Kris31, first welcome to CCF. Second, while I have nothing to add to the discussion of post mint damaged described by @mark and @spruett, it looks to me like someone may have changed the color of your LMC. This can be done by plating the coin with chrome or another metal or also by rubbing mercury on the coin. As you probably know, mercury isn't something that you want to be playing around with bare hands. If there is a chance that it is mercury, then consider storing it in a 2x2 to keep safe.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I appreciate all of the responses. You are all so knowledgeable. It's nice to have somewhere to go with my finds now. Also the possibility of mercury didn't even cross my mind. Thanks for the heads up!

I feel it was caused by a coin counter or a vending machine. The distortion is parallel to the rim, but a coin wrapper would damage the coin closer inward on the coin.
