I tell my cashiers to save me "interesting, ugly, weird looking or otherwise unusual" coins. They found this "ugly black nickel" for me tonight while counting down the drawers...a 1945-D Jefferson War Nickel! My last silver "in the wild" was a 1964-d Roosevelt dime from a grocery store about 10 years ago so this is exciting. Mr. Jefferson has been beat up pretty badly, with scratches, gouges, scrapes, dings, and pits, but silver is silver...these pictures are after acetone + Verdi-Care, originally the coin was much darker. Nice! The only silver I've ever found in circulation was a War Nickel.

I'd be happy getting that in change 8 days a week!

I do love finding a War Nickel. Doesn't happen often but they're out there! And yeah... that poor Jeff has has seen better days!

Always a pleasant surprise to catch some silver in the wild! Getting rarer to do though now a days.

Nice catch.
I've hit two silvers in the last year at my store from bank rolls, a 44-P nickel, and a '41 Merc!
Yes, they are still out there.

The only War Nickels I've come across have been through CRH and old family mason jar collections. I always have my eye out, though!

Not just the coins that have a distinctive look but a distinctive sound. I love the sound of silver in the morning!

I think the only time you will never find silver in circulation is when coins become obsolete.
