A question for the experts who have dealt with the TPGS's. I have an Australian 1915 half penny that has been adjudged to be in F-VF condition. Which Tpgs would be the best one to use for this coin? I will be selling for an Australian friend and want to maximize what I can get for him. Thanks in advance.
Rest in Peace

NGC has a much broader appeal for non-U.S. issues. Check Heritage sold and you will get an exact answer.

There is a huge marketing opportunity for either to set up a office in Australia, even if its only acting as a depot to send Coins to the USA for grading,as slabbing is certainly riding a crest of a wave out here at the moment.

PCGS is the best option for your 1915 halfpenny.
These often have a weak strike which NGC doesn't like and may downgrade it.
PCGS don't care about strike up to about MS65.

Thanks to all. I overlooked mentioning that I am now living in the US, but the replies were relevant. I agree that the TPGS's need to set up offices in Aus, would enhance their business IMO.

Slabbing is so much more important for key date and higher value coins with so many fakes coming out of the likes of China

As much as I would like to see TPGs setting up offices in Australia, I just cannot see it happening. Setting up new business here would cost a fortune (not that I have a figure off the top of my head) and the labor cost would not come cheap. On top of this, can you imagine the cost of shipping by Australia Post? Not to forget to mention that Australia Post technically prohibits coins and banknotes to be sent by mail.

gxseries, it is a nightmare shipping anything to and from Australia these days. Ever since 9/11 the postage/Shipping costs have skyrocketed both domestically and Internationally. I made my first trip back to Aus since moving here and I took a parcel of US coins with me to send from Aus to a fella in NSW he couldn't abide the USD$40 approx that it was gonna cost to ship from here and I don't blame him the USD vs AUD exchange rate kills the hobby...

On another note that 1915 Half Penny may scrape in XF or VF+, waiting to hear back, I had opinions from 3 experienced numismatists that it could get an XF grade. Here's to hoping...

Could you post the images, please ?

I'd like to see the Australian 1915 half penny that has been adjudged to be in F-VF condition but may scrape in XF or VF+.

Is there a website or book that shows examples of each type of Australian coin in each condition ?

Well, I mis-stated the adjudged grade, it was thought to be VF-Xf, valued at $550-1750 dependent on grade. Checked online and the submission was finished: AU-50, Value $3550. Now I am seriously considering taking it to an Auction House to move, this just got serious. Any recommendations?

I've not been able to find a site, with pictures to describe the grading of the coin. I think I found a site, at some point, that described, similar to Photograde, what each grade entails

Looks like a coin that would have a very nice appearance that's showing some harsh photos.

For auction houses concentrate on what the most likely net would be after their sales. Downies, RoxBury's, Numisbid ect anyone could be the best depending on what they usually get for prices and what fees you are able to negotiate.

I'm new to Numismatics in that until Christmas 2016 I haven't collected any coins since the early 1970's. I have started up again as I inherited a lot of US coins from my USC inlaws and was asked to sell them to realise a value that they can pass onto my non- coin collecting brother in law.

As such I am learning the basics and photography is one of those. I have not got the resources at this point to invest in expensive camera gear, but do realise that I need to get better lighting and diffusion. I'm still working on that.

I thought these pics were reasonable. Taken with a cheap USB scope. I am sure with time I will get better at it.

With those Auction Houses, I am certain Downies is Australian, the coin, like me, is based in the US, so I need to move it through one here. I do not know which auction house here has a good following for foreign, especially Australian, coins.

They're not bad in terms of showing detail. I just have a cheap point and shoot camera so I know first hand how harsh they can be on coins and how they can make beautiful coins look worse than they really are.

For the US ones it'll be a bit hit or miss. Heritage or Stacks would get the best price but the fee will be high, probably won't have a lot of leverage in negotiations with them. I wouldn't use Great Collections, their world coins almost always sell to cheap. David Lawrence would be one to look into and explore the option of getting some reserve on it.

Your best bet honestly might just be to look into consigning it with a dealer and let them do the marketing and selling of it. Their fee will likely be less than you lose from an auction house where you have to account for not only the sellers fee but the buyers fees as well.
