Nothing against running a little coin biz out of the church office, right?

Actually, a couple of the counters do keep their eyes open in case they find something interesting in the offering plates. Last year they gave me a 1926 Lincoln Cent and they've also pulled a couple of foreign coins out as well. Yes, I did put a penny back in for the 1926. Also, there were a couple of Ikes in the "Noisy Offering"; a 1971-D and a Bicentennial. Those I left in.

I'm happy to report that our "Noisy Offering" raised nearly a thousand dollars to help support our missionary.
Also, the change was deposited by the time I came in today, so no getting to dig through it some more.

I used to assist as a Deacon at our church, back when silver coinage was fast disappearing. We put all the silver aside, and the wheat pennies we managed to see, a few Canadians, that kind of thing. Then we had a little mini-auction every Wednesday night just before mid-week services for any collector in the congregation. I recall the silver went for double face as the opening bid. We also kept eyes open for older nickels and wheats, and made sure the kids had a little bag of them to bid on or buy at face, amounts geared to allowances common at the time. The one time we found a valuable Mercury dime, the Bishop sold it to the local coin shop, thusly preventing covetousness and jealousy in the congregation.

Paul, $1k should certainly help out your man in the field. Also, very nice find on the JFK. What's your plan for it?

As a fellow Lutheran minister, I'm thinking there is a sermon illustration in here somewhere.

Censtei,
I think so, too.
My wife, daughter and I have all decided to go on our church's mission trip to Nicaragua to work with our missionary there for a week next February. We'll be painting a school, working with students and in the community. I look forward to this opportunity.
My daughter speaks Spanish, so she will be a real addition to our group.
