I am considering buying a 2016 Centennial Mercury dime w/OGP (non graded). They are around $250 now. Is anyone willing to speculate on the upside for these coins? Obviously, IF spot gold increases, the value will increase. But, I wonder about the Merc's (and the quarter/half version's) collector value(s) over time. I am hoping it won't end up a bullion coin - worth (only) it's weight in gold! On another note, I am second guessing the decision to buy the ungraded version instead of a PCGS first strike 70 for around $300. I'd like to get some feedback on the graded $300 dollar version vs. the ungraded $250 version. Thank you in advance!

Can you link to the two you are considering?

In that range and for the price difference, I would go for the PCGS First Strike 70 over ungraded in OGP. But, who am I to say? I can't afford either.

I might be able to get the ungraded version for around $220 if I shop a little. I think the graded first strike price is basically set in stone for now.

Those gold dimes had a high mintage (~125,000) and sold out quickly. So while they're popular, there are a lot of them out there. Among the graded coins, about 90% of them at PCGS are 70s. If you go the graded route, you get authentication and protection (above what the OGP provides) and I'd recommend a 70. With this 69/70 ratio, I consider 69 a discount rather than 70 a premium, and that will help it hold its value.

In the long run, it's quite possible that it will inch closer to bullion pricing just because there are so many. In order to keep its collectible premium, it will have to remain popular. That's not impossible, and seems likely for its classic design. Only time will tell.

Here's a few on ebay:

Decent deal if they'd take a lower offer but, no returns:

Thank you for the information.
Thank you for the links.
Does anyone know the intitial price from the mint (ungraded)? I'll bet people are trying to unload them now for a little more then what they paid.

Well there is a significant mark up right now for sure. The graded ones are looking better and better at around $300.

At first I wasn't sure I wanted one, so I missed them at the mint. I bought mine online for just under $300 plus shipping.

I have two from the mint but wanted a 70 as well. Right after the sell out, there was no shortage of 70 dimes starting at $300+. I waited a while for some of the hype to die down and feel I did ok at $260. There are still many of these out there for sale and they seem to have gotten a second wind, a quick search returned 240 results. I think a lot are still unsold from the dealers who had them graded. That being said, I wouldn't be in any hurry. If you are patient and pay attention you could get a better deal.

As far as the upside goes, I hope there is one. These coins commemorated coins that were issued 100 years ago, older folks know them for sure but they may not mean as much to they younger generations, sort of like most of the first ladies. In my opinion they are iconic and a piece of history.

Great Collections has at least one 70 for auction every week (ending Sunday late afternoon) -- most recent sales have ended around $200 or so (but add the closing fee and applicable sales tax).

Congratulations on your new dime, I think it is a great coin to own despite its mintage and other things some folks complain about. Maybe now you will look at the quarter.

Out of the Dime, Quarter, and Half that were released, I think the Dime is the most likely to hold its value. This is because even though its gold, its at a low enough price point that most collectors can still afford it. I also think that the hype for all the 2017 mint products is helping to keep the secondary market price of these down. Regardless, they are nice coins, and you did well by getting one pretty close to issue price!

The dime is a really nice-looking coin. Glad I picked one up. I don't know if I will try to get the other 2, but probably not.
