Yesterday and this morning I was having some grief on how to deal with a small dollar issue at the bank I deal with. Every 3 months or so I go to the bank and get 400 bucks in quarters and go through them looking for treasure and nearly every time there are coin rolls that are short a quarter (or more) or have nickels or worthless foreign coins buried in them. Generally I absorb the loss as part of the quarter collecting passion I have but this time I'm down $5.75 and my OCD tendencies aren't going to let it go this time. Over the years I've talked to bank staff on this and they know people cheat and turn in rolls that are short but they don't do anything about it because it's not cost effective (imagine that... a bank that doesn't want to count money). It's not just one branch... I've had the same problem at every branch in Medicine Hat and area. So my dilemma is what do I do about it....return the quarters short as I got them but then my name is potentially mud... top them up and take the 5.75 loss... email branch managers and HQ that they have a systemic problem and tell them everything I've said previous...and is it time to quit collecting quarters (this way). Anyways all the above is the setup...I decide this morning that before I do anything rash I need to take a walk and do some ditch picking which is a stress relieving/mind clearing thing for me. So I'm walking along finding the usual bottles and cans and I find a 20 dollar bill! Well that covered the 5.75 deficit and pretty much got rid of the bank angst. Then 20 ft later a 10 dollar bill appeared! OK now I'm thinking...I've been here before...years ago I found $35 after conducting a military style grid search after spotting a 10$ bill. So I did the same thing and found yet another 20$ bill for a grand total of 50 bucks. It was like the Angst Gods were looking out for me! The way ahead was clear to me now...I went home and topped up the quarter rolls and will return them with no compulsion to unload on somebody and I'm quitting coin roll hunts. 100% true story

Here in the "down under", there are very few banks that take customer wrapped rolls, much to the dismay of those who buy the wrapping machines...snort! Just found out yesterday as a matter of fact, why the Armored car co's are delivering boxes with paper rolls instead of shrink-rapped in plastic. Reason was as you said, always short, fell out in boxes etc. I was always getting the short end with plastic. It's been better, just paper are harder to do, plastic you could "see the white's of their eyes" and just open those is silver stackin'. Last few boxes count has been close to accurate so paper must be better. Once I took ten rolls of halves back in wrappers they came in, looked like a customer wrap(?) but same branch bank I got them from wouldn't accept them until all were teller counted, just day before had received them from the same friggin teller! Huh?

Well, you have something in common with my brother.
Where ever he goes, he finds money.
I took him golfing once, on one hole he hits his ball in a creek and while he was looking for it, he found a twoonie in the river!!
Go figure.

Great story! A few years ago I had a great relationship with the local bank and weekly went through 2 to 4 boxes. They would not let me roll them for them. I told them I had a lot of experience rolling coins as part of a change-handling business. But they said they were not allowed b/c they had to run them through their counting/rolling machines.
If you want to know how bad it could get, one time I returned all the bags, they counted them, and told me all was OK. After getting home I found one of their unopened rolls had somehow rolled under the table and I missed it!
I took it back to the head teller, by then a friend, and she was surprised their machine could miss the count by this much. In fact I had to tell her I would not take it back b/c I was that positive - it had been in their wrapper when I picked it up from under the table!
We both got an education that day. After that time I made sure to count them. It was not uncommon to get a box that was not counted correctly. From that time on I counted every roll as I was going through it, and then I would count them as I scooped up each roll to put them in the bag.
They also said they have a cushion for errors such as this in their system. I was told anytime they were short they would make it right them. They were only ever over the correct amount once or twice.
They also asked me if I would mind pulling out the foreign stuff for them if I found any - said I could keep it if I wanted - gave it to the tellers instead! They said they get in trouble with whoever they report to if a roll of theirs is found to contain foreign/tokens/etc.

Great stories! I've been thinking about quitting roll hunting for a while now due to the ARP (Alloy Recovery Program in Canada) taking more and more of the good stuff out of circulation and continually being short changed by the bank. The ditch picking story pushed me over the edge...:)
