A hole in an otherwise reasonable coin. How can we tell whether this is an error or physical damage. What are the signs one would look for.
Thanks

It looks to me like PMD from having something dropped on it. Why? Because I can see the displaced metal to the left and below the ding. Not that sphere thingee--not sure what that is...

I think that's HM's earring. I agree with the PMD for the damage.

metal displacement is a sure sign of PMD. Great photos you've provided to allow us to see your question.

Maybe this could be a strike through error where there was a bit of debris on the blank or the die when the coin was struck that caused this hole.
The hole is also a very odd shape for a simple hit, So maybe this isn't PMD after all.

Yeah, usually a bit of foreign debris on the Die or a fault in the blank when the depression is clean and the surrounding area is pristine.
Just my opinion, you can never be sure.

Thank you all for the input.
It's just the way it seems to follow the ear that caught my interest. Likely PMD. Then an opportunity to learn something.
Think I'll hold onto it anyway as it won't even get me half a cup of coffee nowadays.
