I have a 1962 Lincoln Cent from a proof set, but it dark spots of various sizes on both the obverse and reverse. Should I just spend it? I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

Sad but true. Another proof bites the dust.

Spend it proud knowing that somewhere down the line someone will be thrilled to receive an impaired proof in change..

In this case, I doubt it!

I'm afraid it's a goner, release it in circulation and see how long it would take before someone find's it and posts it here asking what it is

I spend these. I've also pulled proofs from circulation so others have the same idea.

I think I would play around with it and try to clean the spots off of it. You won't be out much and you might learn a new trick. And then spend it.

That is not a bad idea if you are going to spend it anyway.

A shame. I don't think you'll have any luck removing the spots, but what can it hurt?

Prominent black spots like these are the kiss of death on copper coins. Coin care and MS70 will NOT take them off. If it is a better date Coin Care will at least seal the spot so it cannot grow. In this the coin is not worth the trouble. Toss it in the change jar. Related to this particular coin, the business strikes on 1960 through 63 Lincolns often will have several little black spots in an original roll. This something to remember if you are looking through rolls and find a roll where none of the coins have these. That would truly be a choice roll.
