On silver coins is it better to have toning or be blast white?

I like the blast white look myself.

I have a few silver coins that have toning from sitting in an attic. I think the heat did it.

I think there is a better market for the blast white, but there is also a niche for nicely toned coins. I guess it depends on toning as I have seen some that look awful with toning while others are nicely colored.

It's best the coin retains the natural surface--toned or not.
Some toned coins, particularly from the 19th C. are quite attractive.
Personally, I expect to see some toning on coins that are 50 years or older.

It may be news to some collectors that naturally-toned coins with beautiful color are highly sought after by specialists. Morgan dollars in particular can sell for fantastic prices if they have the right "look". As an example, here is an 1886 Morgan dollar that sold at the Heritage FUN (Florida United Numismatists) auction in 2006. It was graded MS65* (star) by NGC, who awarded the special star designation for exceptional eye appeal. Now, the 1886 Morgan is a common coin and generally sells for maybe $150 in NGC MS65. This beautiful coin cost the buyer $2,530, or about 16X the price of an ordinary brilliant coin. I remember one auction not too long ago where the final price for several common-date Morgans with great color exceeded $10,000!

So, which coin would you rather have, the blast white example, or the toner?

I like original color on coins with mark free or almost mark free surfaces.

It's all a matter of personal preference.I personally like the clean mint fresh look, but I have a number of coins that are toned also. Good thing we all like different thing or we would all be after the same coins.

I would rather have a nice toning, but I like brilliant much more than blast white. Some people, though (like hadleydog ) would MUCH rather have a blast white coin than a toned coin.
