This penny jumped out at me. Nice condition and as I explored it I am wondering if if is on a dime planchet, is doubled and maybe a S over D since the S is filled in. I don't know how to judge the planchet question so if you can help on that please. Thoughts please. Rich

Looks normal. In the 60's the letters were close or even into the rim because of the hubs I think. And the S looks like it has a small die chip.

Mark is close. The S is a broken Mintmark punch, quite common among the punches. I like to call the 1968's the "Balloon Letters" because of their bloated appearance. It was a product of the hubs having larger letters and utilizing later state working hubs to make the dies PLUS the overworked use making the stretching and closeness to the rim as the result of deterioration/metal flow. They retooled in 69 apparently for the obverse dies, kept using the old reverses.

Crazy smacks down the answer and elaborates for an additional score point.

Crazyb0 is close. The S is most likely from a damaged punch. Read somewhere ODV-024 and RDV-002 were both brought into production in 1969. Thanks, Doug.

The master hub was needed to be retired. Thus the new design in 1969.
