Just found this going through SBA'S I had saved from years ago never paying any attention to them since they never were very popular and look what I found!

A Wide Rim/Near Date in real nice condition.

You never know what's lying around with other supposedly regular coins etc.

Opinions on grade- MS State?

It looks a little too dinged to be a MS coin. But a lower grade. But always nice to find. A guide I just checked mentioned $60 for a MS-63. So a lower value for your coin. Most of the time if you were going to buy a coin like that, you would probably go for a MS-63-65. I need to check my find and see what it grades as.

were the wide rims released for circulation or in mint sets?

Thanks Coop- always appreciate your expertise.

It does have some spots here and there but overall also has some nice mint luster yet.

As far as dings, I have PCGS MS 64 and MS65 coins that have dings on them.

Anyway, I just was pleasantly surprised to find it in with all the other SBA'S that I never paid much attention to.

Looks like a slight bit of rub- AU58

I do not know if any were placed in mint sets, but according to http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page29.html, 643 wide rim dies were used but total mintage is unknown. With that many dies used, it is possible some may be in mint sets since mint set coins at the time were ordinary business strikes.

Grade - about an AU55, probably closer to 50.

These coins were in circulation - not just in sets.

I have found a couple dozen of these in change over the years, through postal vending machines and the like. And yes, I can tell the difference.

Problem is, the price guides show them at a high value, but I've never been able to get more than a few dollars for them.

Actually the date is in the same position. The rim comes closer to the date. Note the date location below the bust in both images.
